Helen Galley obtained her PhD in human zinc metabolism from the University of Leeds in 1989. She developed an interest in free radicals and antioxidants and later became involved in intensive care and liver transplantation research. Professor Galley was appointed to the post of Lecturer in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care in Aberdeen in 1995 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2002 and awarded a Personal Chair in 2010. Professor Galley has published on a wide range of topics and her research interests now focus on modulation of inflammatory and immune responses in the critically ill, particularly the melatonin as a therapy for inflammation and pain. She was awarded the Sir Humprey Davy medal by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2002 for her services to Anaesthesia Research in the UK and in 2011 was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. In 2012 she was also awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology by election and an honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in 2016.
Professor Galley teaches on BSc, MSc and MBChB courses and was Degree Programme Co-ordinator for the intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences for 10 years. She reviews for a number of basic science, anaesthesia and critical care journals and was the editor of a series of 11 books called Critical Care Focus. She was an Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia for 10 years and is now a Director and Trustee of the journal. She sits on the Board of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia and is also President of the Anaesthetic Research Society. Professor Galley was Chair of the North of Scotland Research Ethics Service Committee 2 from 2012-2019 and sits on the College of Life Sciences and Medicine Ethics Committee (CERB). Professor Galley is also co-lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Athena SWAN for the Institute of Medical Sciences.
