Engineers deliver carbon capture masterclass for Chinese delegation

A bespoke training programme on carbon capture and storage technologies was delivered to a delegation of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) by engineering academics last week (January 9-10).

Dr Waheed Afzal and Dr Yingfang Zhou, developed and delivered the tailor-made, executive training programme for over 20 senior executives from the CNPC, PetroChina and its subsidiaries.

The programme provided a comprehensive understanding of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, focusing on their principles, deployment strategies, and practical applications in the European oil and gas sector.

Topics covered included carbon capture technologies, storage solutions, enhanced oil recovery, decarbonisation strategies, and the broader implications of sustainability in the energy transition.

This intensive training attracted over 20 senior executives from PetroChina’s leadership, including senior subject experts, directors, senior engineers, and project managers representing key subsidiaries and divisions such as PetroChina Tarim Oilfield, Huabei Oilfield, Daqing Oilfield, Jilin Oilfield, Liaohe Oilfield, Xinjiang Oilfield, Changqing Oilfield, Coalbed Methane Company Limited, and Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection Department. These leaders are responsible for making strategic decisions related to sustainability, environmental impact, health and safety, and technological advancements within the company.

Participants expressed strong satisfaction with the programme, highlighting the practical relevance of the content to their roles. They particularly appreciated the real-world applications, opportunities to interact, and expert-led discussions, which provided valuable insights into integrating CCUS technologies in the oil and gas sector.

This event is organized by the University of Aberdeen's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) team in collaboration with Petromentor Ltd. The training programme can play a crucial role in equipping senior leaders with the tools to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the oil and gas sector.
