The Thomas Reid Prize for Book Collecting

The Thomas Reid Prize for Book Collecting

The Aberdeen Humanities Fund is pleased to announce the inaugural Thomas Reid Prize for Book Collecting.

Endowed by Dr William Zachs, the Reid Prize is part of the Scottish Universities Book Collecting Prize Scheme, which seeks to encourage the collection of the printed word in physical form among the students of Scotland’s ancient universities.  Latin secretary to King James VI, Thomas Reid (d.1624) was a great book collector and benefactor of the University of Aberdeen.  Among the more than 1300 volumes he gave to the University was the famous Aberdeen Bestiary.

The Reid Prize is open to all registered students of the University of Aberdeen, and will be awarded for the best collection of the printed word in any form, from books to match tickets to film posters.  The winner will be awarded £500 to spend on an item or items for their own collection, and £250 to spend on a gift of their choice to the University of Aberdeen Library’s Special Collections.  It is envisaged that there will also be a joint award ceremony for the winners of each of the Scottish Universities Book Prizes.
