A fifth year dental student from the University of Aberdeen's Dental School has won the recent Aberdeen heat of the The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd)'s inaugural National Dental Clinical Skills Competition.
Held on Monday, November 19, Hannah Geller beat stiff competition from other dental students within the School to book her place at the grand final of the Dental Clinical Skills Competition. Coming second and third on the night were Robert Campbell and Nicole Kettles.
The competition, sponsored by DENTSPLY, has heats taking place in 14 UK dental schools from October to December 2013. During these heats final year dental students have the opportunity to showcase their clinical dental skills with the best student from each heat winning a travel and accommodation package to compete in the grand final of the Competition. The competition provides a valuable opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills within a competitive environment and compare results with their peers as well as a welcome chance for students to interact with DENTSPLY representatives.
Professor Helen Craddock, Director of Dentistry and Chair in Dental Education and Integrated Oral Care at the Dental School, was joined on the judging panel by Mr Martin Donachie, Clinical Director, Consultant & Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry. Both judges noted the excellent clinical skills shown by all students entered into the competition.
During the grand final, which will take place at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in March 2014, Hannah will compete against other heat winners on various clinical skill stations. As well as taking the accolade and pride in being the first winner of this new completion, the finals winner also receives an expenses-paid trip to Chicago in February 2015 to attend the prestigious Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting.
