New book explores the evolution of hybrid and remote working

A leading expert on hybrid working at the University of Aberdeen has published a new book examining how remote and hybrid work have transformed office jobs and reshaped the modern workplace.

Donald Hislop, Professor in the Sociology of Work and Technology in the Business School, explores the rapid growth of flexible working arrangements following the pandemic and the challenges and opportunities they present for employees, managers and organisations in his new book, ‘The Evolution of Hybrid and Remote Working – Transforming Office-Based Jobs.

Written for both academics and practitioners, the book combines the latest research with practical guidance on one of the most significant workplace developments of recent decades.

It examines issues including productivity at home and in the office, health and wellbeing, workplace isolation, managing work-life boundaries, leading hybrid teams, running effective hybrid meetings, and how different home and office workspaces influence working practices and behaviours.

Professor Hislop said: "Hybrid and remote working have become a permanent feature of working life for millions of people. Through this book, I wanted to provide an evidence-based understanding of how these ways of working affect employees, managers and organisations, while offering practical insights into how the benefits can be maximised and the challenges addressed."

Professor Stefanie Reissner, Durham University Business School, described the publication as: "This timely and authoritative book offers rigorous international analysis of remote and hybrid work practices. It addresses critical themes in remote and hybrid work practice and the management of geographically dispersed workers. An indispensable resource for scholars and practitioners looking for evidence-based insights into remote and hybrid work."
