Aberdeen students win first outdoor athletics team title

Aberdeen University Athletics Club claimed a historic overall team title at the Scottish Student Sport Athletics Outdoor Championships last Wednesday, edging a dramatic contest by a single point.

Competing at Aberdeen Sports Village, the hosts finished on 315 points, narrowly ahead of Glasgow University Athletics Club on 314, with the outcome only confirmed after the final tally.

The close finish brought a tense conclusion to an event that saw strong performances across the programme, including multiple championship records in the relay events for Aberdeen.

The women’s 4x100m team - Briagha Cook, Ihinosen Ibhanesebhor, Eve Garry and Grace Brennan - won gold running a Championship record time of 47.69.

The men’s 4x100m team of Tony Wesley, Bradley Francis, Thomas Brennan and Justin Ekeh also finished top of the podium, running a Championship record time of 42.72

There were a number of standout individual performances contributing to the overall victory. Briagha Cook secured gold in both the 100m hurdles and long jump, while Bradley Francis claimed gold in the 400m hurdles alongside silver in the 200m. Grace Brennan impressed with gold in the pole vault and silver in the 400m hurdles, and Katherine Fowler won gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump, respectively.

Euan Wallace recorded the highest individual event points across his seven events, including gold in the 110m hurdles and bronze in both the high jump and long jump. Adam Brown delivered a key victory in the 1500m.

Further medals across the sprints, steeplechase, hurdles, 5000m, jumps, and throws added crucial depth to the team score.

The result is understood to be the first time Aberdeen University Athletics Club has won the overall outdoor title, marking a significant milestone for the club.

The victory continues a run of form for the team this season. At the Scottish University & College Sport Indoor Championships earlier this year, Aberdeen secured 17 medals and finished second overall.
