The University of Aberdeen received a highly positive outcome in the latest Tertiary Quality Enhancement Review (TQER).
Conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the review confirms that the University is ‘effective in managing academic standards, enhancing the quality of the learning experience, and enabling student success.’
TQER is Scotland’s national method for reviewing tertiary education providers as part of the Tertiary Quality Enhancement Framework. The University’s review visits took place late 2025 and early 2026, involving a team of five independent reviewers, including a student reviewer.
The review team highlighted eight areas of good practice, including:
Strong oversight of quality processes through the Quality Assurance Committee.
A mature and context‑responsive approach to transnational education partnerships.
Effective embedding of the Aberdeen 2040 strategy throughout the curriculum.
A well‑developed virtual learning environment that supports consistency, employability, and student engagement.
Proactive and collaborative student support and wellbeing services.
A strategic approach to employability and skills development.
An embedded culture of listening to the student voice.
A proactive approach to staff development led by the Centre for Academic Development.
The report also made five recommendations aimed at further strengthening consistency in assessment feedback, enhancing externality in Professional Services Review, improving clarity of assessment expectations, and supporting more consistent use of data in course and programme review.
Professor Peter Edwards, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, said: "The publication of this Tertiary Quality Enhancement Review report is a strong endorsement of our commitment to providing high quality education and an outstanding student experience at the University of Aberdeen.
“We are particularly pleased that the review recognises the effectiveness of our approach to academic standards, our embedded quality culture, and the dedication of our staff to continuous enhancement. It is especially encouraging to see recognition of how our Aberdeen 2040 strategy is embedded across the curriculum and shapes the learning experience for our students at every stage.
"We welcome the insights and recommendations provided by the review team and will use them constructively as we continue to strengthen our learning, teaching and student support, ensuring our education remains inclusive, interdisciplinary, international and sustainable - whilst responsive to the needs of our students and wider society."
The University will now develop an action plan to address the recommendations and continue its commitment to continuous enhancement across all areas of learning, teaching, and student support.
