Speaking at the TaPRA Conference: reflecting on collaborative practice and power structures

Aberdeen postgraduate researcher brings empirical data and new insight to the annual Theatre and Performance Research Association conference.

In August, Postgraduate Researcher Sian MacGregor had the privilege and delight of returning to the annual gathering of the Theatre and Performance Research Association (TaPRA).

Held in a different setting each year – this time at Warwick University near Coventry – it’s an enriching and demanding meeting of theatre academics, many of whom have also had experience in the professional sector. It’s an opportunity to hear about other work happening in all areas of performance, and to talk with like-minded people, with formal presentations and friendly chats.

"It was gratifying to be back for the fourth time, and to be invited to present to one of the working groups. I spoke about the deeper understandings of being ‘youth-led’ in the context of professional children's theatre, and what it really means. And what it looks like to work alongside children and young people, attempting to share power in creative spaces.
I used data collected during my Valuing Young Audiences project with Aberdeen and Imaginate to help untangle the meanings and possibilities of being truly ‘youth-led’ in practice and within organisations. Amidst these conversations and observations, I found and shared examples of practice and a wholly workable ethos which involved working with children and young people equitably.
I was grateful to be able to discuss these amongst interested colleagues from the world over, supported by SGSAH/AHRC funding." Sian MacGregor
