Aberdeen Professor leads major obesity conference

Professor Alex Johnstone co-led the organising committee of the UK Association for the Study of Obesity annual conference, with Dr Kevin Deans from NHS Grampian. The conference took place in Aberdeen last week (Sept 10-11).

The 2025 UK Congress on Obesity (UKCO) was held at the P&J Live and attendees were enjoyed a packed two-day programme full of talks, symposia and networking opportunities.

The list of speakers included Professor John Speakman from the University’s School of Biological Science, as well as experts from the Scottish Government, Public Health Scotland and Food Standards Scotland, embracing the theme of the meeting, ‘Understanding Obesity: From Research to Clinical and Public Health Practice’.

Professor Johnstone said: “We had a fantastic time at last week’s conference, and I am grateful to all the brilliant speakers who took time out of their busy schedules to participate. The conference generated talking points, in particular with the puplic and patient members, who shared their lived experience, and it was wonderful to meet and see so many international experts from the area of obesity and nutrition come together to share their knowledge.

“The aim of the conference is to encourage innovation, highlight new research and promote best practice in obesity research and treatment and last week’s event certainly delivered on this. My grateful thanks to all the local organising committee for ensuring the success of this meeting.”
