New programme opens up STEM opportunities for student teachers

The School of Education has launched an innovative new programme to help train new teachers in computing science and the sciences.

Supported by a £141,000 Scottish Government grant, the two year pilot will enable the School of Education to train new teachers who will equip young people with the skills vital for success in high-growth start-ups.

The MA(Hons.) Education with STEM Subjects programme will allow HND students in Applied Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Biology) and Computing subjects to articulate into the School of Education in Year 3 of University to develop their subject and education knowledge and skills in preparation for Initial Teacher Education in Year 4.

Programme Director Fraser Hepburn said: “Our innovative new programme is supported by Scottish Government for two years and will allow the University to help attract students through an alternative pathway and support them into teaching.

“This contributes towards recruitment for schools in subjects that have been historically hard to recruit both locally and nationally.”

MA(Hons.) Education with STEM Subjects is available for application now through UCAS for September 2025 entry.
