University of Aberdeen team shortlisted for a brace of Digital Health and Care Awards

The team behind GEMINI have been named as finalists for two awards at the Digital Health and Care Awards 2025.

The multi-disciplinary study which involves teams from NHS Grampian and Kheiron Medical Technologies is being recognised for using AI to help detect breast cancers in routine practice.

Hosted by Holyrood Events, the awards, are an opportunity to highlight ‘the achievements of the individuals and teams working in the health, social care, and housing sectors, whose innovation and creativity continue to put Scotland at the forefront of the digital revolution’.

In the GEMINI study, AI software, named 'Mia', created by Kheiron Medical Technologies Ltd., was assessed by a research team led by Professor Lesley Anderson, Chair in Health Data Science at the University of Aberdeen.

The GEMINI study identified 11 additional cancers by using the AI tool assisting radiologists in finding more breast cancers. The study demonstrated that integrating AI into breast screening could improve cancer detection, maintain recall rates, and reduce workload by up to 36%.

The team are nominated in ‘Industry Collaboration Award’ and the ‘Data Driven Innovation Award’ and the ceremony is due to be held on February 18 in Edinburgh.
