Aberdeen named top university for earning advanced geoscience degree in recent survey

The Geoscience Energy Society of Great Britain (GESGB) and WeConnect Energy recently published the 2024 Geoscience Salary Survey, which aims to better understand the industry’s needs, remuneration and benefits.

Of those surveyed, 62.2% said they earned their highest qualification in the UK, and the University of Aberdeen was named the top higher education institution attended, with 17.5% of respondents earning an advanced degree from the university.

With ever-evolving challenges surrounding our understanding of the subsurface, natural resources, the energy transition and climate crisis, as noted in a recent report by the UK Government Office for Science, the demand for geoscientists across sectors continues to grow.

Professor David Muirhead, Head of the School of Geosciences, said of the survey, “these results demonstrate the value of our degrees right across the geosciences sector, making it clear that a Geoscience degree from Aberdeen enhances your career prospects.

“Aberdeen has a longstanding commitment to education in the Geosciences and as a clear leader in this survey it shows. As we continue to modify our degree offerings to suit the ever-changing needs and challenges of our time, with a focus on skills-based education, we look forward to delivering further high quality Geoscience education far into the future.”

The results highlight the strength of the School of Geosciences’ postgraduate programmes and follow the strong performance in this year's National Student Survey. In the 2024 NSS the University of Aberdeen was named:

  • 1st in the UK for Earth Sciences
  • 1st in the UK for Human Geography
  • 1st in Scotland for Forensic and Archaeological Sciences
  • 1st in Scotland for Physical Geographical Sciences based on positive responses
