Nelly is breaking boundaries as she heads for graduation

Nelly Afua Ako Dompreh is one step closer to reaching her goal of making a "meaningful impact in the global business landscape" after celebrating her graduation this week.

Nelly, 24, joined the University of Aberdeen in 2023 to begin her MSc in International Business Management – a move that, she says, was no coincidence.

“Choosing the University of Aberdeen for my MSc in International Business Management was a strategic decision. Its renowned faculty, global perspective and strong emphasis on practical learning aligned perfectly with my career aspirations.

“I read about the numerous career fairs that introduce students to many firms and the support from the Students’ Union regarding internships and graduate jobs. Additionally, the University's rich history, vibrant campus life and supportive community made it an ideal environment for personal and academic growth.”

While Nelly, from Ghana, has enjoyed many aspects of her time in Aberdeen, her highlights have included her learning journey, as well as being involved in the University’s Beyond Boundaries brand marketing project.

She says: “My experience was nothing short of transformative. From engaging lectures to enriching extracurricular activities, every moment contributed to my growth.

“Being chosen as one of the faces of the University as part of their brand campaign was a surreal honour. It filled me with immense pride and joy to represent such a prestigious institution. The experience was dreamlike and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to embody the values and spirit of the University in advertisements and promotional materials.

“It was a moment of validation, affirming my dedication to my studies and involvement in campus life. Being selected as a face of the school not only showcased my achievements but also provided a platform to inspire and connect with fellow students, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

“This opportunity was a defining moment in my University experience, reinforcing my pride in being a part of the University of Aberdeen family. Overall, my journey was a testament to the University's commitment to excellence and inclusivity.”

As Nelly takes her next step into the future, she’s excited for everything to come – both professionally and personally.

“Graduating this year feels like a whirlwind of emotions. I feel a mix of excitement for the future, pride in what I've accomplished and a touch of nostalgia for the memories I made along the way. It's a bittersweet moment, marking not only the end of one chapter but also the beginning of exciting new opportunities for me – my future is filled with exciting possibilities!

“I aim to leverage my MSc to pursue a career that allows me to make a meaningful impact in the global business landscape. I'm eager to apply my skills and knowledge to contribute positively to the world. I hope to continue traveling, exploring new cultures and expanding my horizons. Ultimately, my goal is to continue growing personally and professionally while making a difference in whatever path I choose.”

Having thrived during her time at Aberdeen, Nelly has some advice for the next cohort of students to join the University.

“My top tip for new students is to embrace every opportunity to learn, explore and connect with others. Stay curious, be open to new experiences and don't hesitate to seek support when needed. University is not just about academics; it's also about personal growth and discovering your passions. So, make the most of this transformative journey!”
