Bright Club comedy night returns to Aberdeen

Bright Club comedy night returns to Aberdeen

An entertainment night which mixes research and comedy for an evening of laughs, music and new ideas will return to Aberdeen.

Bright Club, which began in Aberdeen in 2012 but has taken a break since 2022, will return to Spin on Littlejohn Street on 14 March at 7pm.

The format involves a researcher presenting their work as a stand-up comedy routine along with a compere and academics from the University of Aberdeen and The James Hutton Institute are taking their turn at the mic for the latest session.

The inimitable Susan Morrison, writer, broadcaster and comedian and presenter of Radio 4’s Historically Funny will preside over the proceedings.

Dr Derek Ball, the University of Aberdeen’s Head of Sport Science will take and entertaining look at life as a human lab rat while Dr David McLernon will dig deep for laughs exploring the danger of trousers and other scary tales from a risk-averse statistician.

The James Hutton Institute’s Dr Orla Shortall will be talking about social sciences research and cows. Be prepared for amoosing cow anecdotes and some explosive methane facts. Meanwhile Dr Matt Hare, also from the Hutton, will be talking about what it is like being a scientist doing research on how to reduce the impacts of climate change and ecosystem loss. It will include thoughts on the type of policies we adopt, the terms we use, the human gift for doing DIY badly and the problem facing squirrel migrants.

Dr Chris Croly, Public Engagement with Research Manager at the University of Aberdeen, said: “Bright Club is a fantastic way to engage with research and new ideas in a fun and entertaining way – all in a comedy club setting. It’s a great atmosphere and our compere for this event is Susan Morrison from Radio Scotland’s Time Travels and the Edinburgh Fringe.

“Whether you were a regular before or are brand new to Bright Club, come along and join the fun.”
