University of Aberdeen climbs 12 places in QS World University rankings

The University of Aberdeen has climbed 12 places to 208th in the world in this year's revamped QS World University Rankings.

The University is also again ranked in the top 30 in the UK overall (29th), and consistently from 25th to 33rd in the UK across eight of the nine metrics which determine the overall ranking. The exception to this is the new measure for environmental sustainability, in this measure the University has been ranked 4th in the UK and 21st in the world.

This is the University’s best performance to date for sustainability and follows on from the Times Higher Education’s Impact Ranking published earlier this month, in which the University was ranked 70th in the world and 18th in the UK, as well as the full QS Sustainability ranking published last year which placed the University 64th globally and 17th in the UK.

On a global level, the University also performed particularly well on metrics relating to international students and staff with a rank of 77th in the world for international students, and 144th in the world for international staff. Another highlight, globally, is the University’s ranking of 180th for the new ‘International Research Network’ ranking which measures international research collaborations.

The QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and is generally considered to be one of the “Big Two” international university league tables in higher education alongside the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Senior Vice-Principal Professor Karl Leydecker said: “We are very pleased to see that the University has risen in the new QS rankings. We are particularly delighted to be recognised in the Sustainability metric, which is at the heart of our Aberdeen 2040 strategy.

“Our consistently strong performance in this important area of activity reflects the excellent progress which is being made in delivering the University’s sustainability ambitions as set out in our Aberdeen 2040 strategy.

“Overall, our average UK ranking across the major league tables continues to rise year-on-year, with the University ranked in the top 200 globally in the Times Higher World University Ranking, and in the top 20 in the UK in the Guardian and Times & Sunday Times rankings.  This is extremely encouraging, particularly given the very challenging external environment in which we are operating currently, and I would like to thank all our staff for their hard work in furthering the University’s standing nationally and globally.”
