The current Rector Robin Harper MSP steps down from his role on June 30.
The Role of the Rector - the role of the Rector is to represent and support students at the University of Aberdeen.
Term - Rectors serve for 3 years.
Supporting Students- The Rector plays an important role in representing and supporting students at the University. He/she holds regular surgeries to which any student who would like to raise a particular issue or concern is welcome to come. The Rector also spearheads wider campaigns, both within the University and nationally, to ensure that student life at Aberdeen continues to meet the needs of all students.
Member of the University Court - The Rector is (ex officio) a member of the University Court and is the students' representative on the University Court, where all major decisions are made. The Rector appoints to the Court a Rector's Assessor. The Rector's Assessor is a representative within the University and will also be a member of the University Court. This ensures that, combined with the President of the Students' Association there is effective student representation at Court. Court is held seven times per academic year, all of which the Rector would be expected to attend.
Chair of the University Court - Currently, the Rector is the Chair of the University Court. It should be noted, however, that the University Court agreed in principle last year to remove the automatic right of the Rector to chair Court. Subject to the outcome of discussions with the Privy Council as to the legal mechanism required to implement such a change, this change might come into effect during the course of the forthcoming Rector's term of office.
Independent - The Rector is independent of both the Student Association and the Administration of the University.
