New online collection on tourism in post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe published

Dr Piotr Niewiadomski, an Associate Editor of the Tourism Geographies journal – one of the world-leading outlets for tourism scholars, has recently compiled and edited a special online collection on tourism in the post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of the collection is two-fold. First, it brings together all TG publications that contribute to the general understanding of tourism development in the post-communist context of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) over the last three decades. Second, it lays foundations for further research on tourism in CEE and how the legacies of communism continue to shape the tourism geographies of the region.

Although it has been over 30 years since post-communist transformations in CEE started and many scholars have stopped viewing CEE as a ‘transition region’, the category of post-communism is very much ‘alive’ and the recent tragic events in Ukraine bluntly remind us of that. More research is therefore needed on how tourism fosters post-communist changes and how the communist past of CEE influences tourism development in the region. The special collection edited by Dr Niewiadomski provides a good starting point for further scholarship on the topic.

The collection can be accessed here.
