Rowett scientist nominated for food and drink award

An Aberdeen scientist has been shortlisted for a prestigious award at this year's Food and Drink Federation Awards.

Professor Alexandra Johnstone from the Rowett Institute has been nominated for Food and Drink Scientist of the Year at the award ceremony, which will take place in London this week (Thursday).

Professor Johnstone’s research focuses on developing strategies that produce a sustainable weight loss with a dietary and/or behavioural intervention.

Professor Johnstone was nominated for demonstrating working with a real commitment and passion with a wide range of stakeholders including political, industry, media and the community, at a national and international level. Her research on the role of protein in satiety underpinned the launch by Marks and Spencer plc of a calorie-counted meal range now known as ‘Balanced for you’. This ‘first to market’ success led to many other companies developing protein-enriched foods and to Prof Johnstone’s interactions with several Scottish-based companies.

The annual awards celebrate the diversity, dynamism, and dedication of those who work in the industry and ensure that food and drink is so widely enjoyed across the UK, and around the world.

The prestigious event brings together around 500 guests to celebrate the success of the winners and the strength of the food and drink industry. Jay Rayner, British journalist, writer, broadcaster and celebrity restaurant critic, will host the ceremony.

Professor Johnstone said: “I am delighted and honoured to be nominated and shortlisted the Food & Drink Federation, Food and Drink Scientist of the Year. My nomination is of course a reflection of the brilliant team effort in our research activities at the Rowett Institute.“
