Students to take on their lecturers as BBC Radio 4 quiz comes to Aberdeen

A team of University academics will take on a group of students as BBC Radio 4's popular quiz show, The 3rd Degree, comes to Aberdeen.

The University of Aberdeen has been selected as a location for the ninth series of the show, which is hosted by comedian Steve Punt.

It is the first time the quiz has visited the Granite City and the recording will take place in front of an audience at Elphinstone Hall in the King’s College Campus on Monday March 4.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the contest, which pits a team of three students against three of their lecturers.

The rounds vary between Specialist Knowledge and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and individual questions and "Highbrow and Lowbrow".

The academic team is made up of Professor Robert Millar, Professor in Linguistics and Scottish Language, Professor Pete Stollery, Professor of Electroacoustic Music and Composition, and Dr Olivia Woolley, a lecturer in law.

The students taking them on are Eden Mikula, who is in the third year of a music degree, Laura Sudhof, who is studying towards an MA (joint hons) International Relations & Linguistics and Mitch Skilling, a Master of Laws student.

Professor Stollery said the academic team members were looking forward to the contest, but would be wary of their student opponents.

“We are told this is very much about fun and the experience but we obviously have our professional reputations to uphold!” he added.

“That said, we are immensely proud of the talents of our students here at the University of Aberdeen and this is a great opportunity for them to showcase their knowledge. We are sure that the trio selected to represent them will give us a real run for our money and whatever the result, it promises to be a great night.”

Eden, 20, who comes from Ardrishaig, in Argyll and Bute, said: “I’m very excited and rather surprised I was picked to take part! It’s going to be great to work with the full radio production team and Steve Punt.”

Laura, 22, who is originally from Germany, added: “It’s going to be a nice afternoon, a chat, some jokes and I might even learn something!”

Mitch, 24, who is from Aberdeenshire, said: “I'm looking forward to the quiz! I've been told not to expect to win given the quality of the other team, but I'd like to think I'll bring something to the table. Quizzing makes me a little bit competitive, but my main concern is not making a fool of myself on national radio.”

Doors for the recording will open at 5:40pm at Elphinstone Hall, King’s College, Old Aberdeen, and members of the public are welcome to attend to support the teams. No ticket is necessary.
