Best student paper award for PhD student

A PhD student in Geosciences has been honoured with a prestigious award by a leading geology journal.

Adam Cawood won the 2018 Best Student Paper Award in the Journal of Structural Geology for his paper, ‘3D mechanical stratigraphy of a deformed multi-layer: Linking sedimentary architecture and strain partitioning’.

The paper explored new methods to describe and understand structural developments, including digital virtual outcrop mapping, virtual scanlines and distribution diagrams of structural style.

In his laudation, Cees Passchier, the Journal’s Chief Editor, praised the paper for its “thorough, field-based approach to structural analysis.”

He added: “The paper is beautifully illustrated and methodically, carefully written. The authors made a great contribution to structural geology.

“We would like to extend our warm congratulations to Adam and his PhD supervisor Clare E. Bond for this splendid piece of work, which the Journal of Structural Geology is proud to have had the opportunity to publish."
