Northern Cultures and Sustainable Natural Resource Politics - Junior Researchers Wanted

Applications invited for two vacant junior researcher posts at the University of Lapland, in the above doctoral programme. Closing date 15 December 2017, by 1pm.

These two fixed-term positions will be filled from 1 May 2018.

The joint graduate school at the University of Lapland is divided into multidisciplinary doctoral programmes. The doctoral programme Northern Cultures and Sustainable Natural Resource Politics focuses thematically on encountering questions about the use of natural resources, their management and natural resources politics, aspects of business life as well as cultural and social viewpoints.The programme is based on Northern and Arctic areas and their dependence on natural circumstances and resources, and the global interest in utilising them. Therefore, questions about justice, sustainability, and political and societal decision-making have become significant.

Programme theme encompasses:

  • questions pertaining to tourism
  • well-being politics
  • indigenous research
  • social and cultural change
  • international and national political and economic decision-making
  • conflicts related to the environment
  • impacts of natural resource use on northern livelihoods.

The positions are to be applied for a period of 1–2 (+2) years, depending on the stage of the applicant’s doctoral dissertation.

The responsibilities of a junior researcher include completing a doctoral degree at the University of Lapland and participating in teaching of the related field. Work time used for teaching is to be max. 5% of the total working time. Those selected for the doctoral programme are to conduct their doctoral dissertation on a full-time basis and to participate in other activities of the graduate school in Rovaniemi.
