Resonant Histories: Echoes of Al-Andalus in Granada' documentary screening with Q+A

In person only (KCT4, King’s College: 1-3pm, Thurs Jan 29)

Join us for this special screening of Dr Matthew Machin-Autenreith’s documentary, ‘Resonant Histories: Echoes of Al-Andalus in Granada’. This in person only event will comprise the screening followed by a Q an A.

In the shadows of the Alhambra palace, reconstructed sounds of Spain’s medieval Muslim and Jewish past, referred to as al-Andalus, reverberate around the streets of Granada. Past and present collide in the musical fusions of Spanish, European and North African artists who explore the links between the ‘sister’ traditions of flamenco and Arab-Andalusian music, which supposedly trace their origins to the musical confluences of al-Andalus. Drawing on a range of ethnographic encounters in the city of Granada, this documentary traces the development of a fusion scene in southern Spain from the mid-20th century that brings into dialogue different musical and cultural communities who work together to create re-imagined musical reflections of the past. However, there is much more to this story than simply musical fusion and historical memory. The film also explores how the preservation of Moroccan Arab-Andalusian music in Spain and its encounter with flamenco today, is tied up with wider social and cultural circumstances such as the history of Spanish colonialism in Morocco (1912-1956), Moroccan migration into Spain from the 1990s, interculturalism and gender. The film emerged from the European Research Council funded project ‘Past and Present Musical Encounters across the Strait of Gibraltar’ (MESG__758221).
