Buchan Library - Book ShelvesAbout the Buchan Library

When the Elphinstone Institute was first set up, the seminal folklorist David Buchan was appointed Director Designate. Buchan graduated with a PhD from the University of Aberdeen, and this position would have enabled his return to Aberdeen to pursue a life-long interest in the folklore of the North-East. Sadly, David Buchan passed away before being able to take up the directorship of the Institute. After his death in 1994, his wife, the notable folklorist Diane Goldstein, generously bequeathed his library to the Elphinstone Institute. The Buchan Library is now a vital part of the University of Aberdeen's Folklore collection.

Catalogue

Reflecting David Buchan's interest in North-East folklore, the library holds an extensive range of texts on North-East Folklore Studies, in addition to books on international folklore, and a considerable collection of Scottish literature. The library is a reference library, and as such no books can be checked out. A partial listing of the books in the Buchan Library can be found by following this link: Buchan Library Catalogue. The library is frequently augmented by gifts and bequests from other donors.
