Public Lecture Series with Aberlangs
ONLINE-ONLY EVENT; BOOKING REQUIRED
Moving abroad can be overwhelming, especially if one is not familiar with the new country’s traditions and language. Thanks to the Essential Scots-Polish Dictionary app, today thousands of Polish migrants have access to Scottish culture and language at their fingertips. During this online talk, Alicja Tokarska, one of the trio of translators who worked on the project, will talk about some of the challenges and interesting aspects of bringing the app to live. She’ll also share how the knowledge of both cultures within the team helped shape the resource and improve it. Attendees will also get a tour of the dictionary to see for themselves how the app works.
Alicja Tokarska is a Polish translator and subtitler who specializes in inclusion and diversity, culture and heritage, and education. She is the Coordinator of the Polish Network of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. In her free time, Alicja learns the art of dressmaking, runs, tries out new vegan recipes, and cohosts a Polish radio show in a local community station. She lives in Glasgow with her partner and their two cats, Laszlo and Nandor.
