Elphinstone Institute Public Lecture Series

Martin Sim, the longtime Fireball swinger, will discuss this coastal Hogmanay custom in an illustrated talk. Starting with its slightly cloudy origins, the talk will move onto how the event has changed over the years, how it is organised, how Fireballs are constructed, the meaning the festival has for its participants, and the benefits for the festival of engaging with younger members of the community. Martin will share video and photos documenting the ceremony throughout and a book will be available to purchase for those interested.

Book Launch: The evening will also act as a launch for Martin's new book, entitled The Stonehaven Fireball Ceremony: 1850? to 2025, which he will be selling on the night.

Martin Sim has seen almost all of the ceremonies since he was five years old. He became a Fireball Swinger in 1978 and has been an active member of the Stonehaven Fireballs Association since 2002.
