About Sports Science

Sports and Exercise Science includes the study of the body's responses to exercise and the adaptations that occur in response to regular exercise. Sports and Exercise Science also includes the role that regular modest levels of physical activity can play in maintaining health.

We offer three related but distinct undergraduate programmes of study in sports and exercise related disciplines.

  • Sport and Exercise Science - based on our biomedical sciences physiology and biochemistry courses incorporating exercise physiology, biochemistry and nutrition.
  • Exercise and Health Science - teaches elements of physiology and nutrition as well as addressing the impact of exercise on health related aspects of disease prevention and treatment and incorporates Sport Psychology in the third year.
  • Applied Sport Science - this programme has a similar structure to Sport and Exercise Science and includes courses in Strength and Conditioning. Students will also undertake a placement that requires you to work within a designated sport with coaches and athletes to deliver Sport Science support.

All three programmes share a generic first year and utilise elements of the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) curriculum to provide flexibility and breadth to each of the degree programmes.

Why Study Sports Science at Aberdeen?

  • The programme at the University of Aberdeen is based on a strong curriculum in physiology, biochemistry and nutrition.
  • Our sports science courses complement those in the fundamental biomedical sciences and allow students to place their knowledge in the context of sports performance and physical activity for health.
