Dr Aravinda Guntupalli recently published a paper on food and fuel poverty in a media review in the UK in the Social Science and Medicine journal: Heating or eating? The framing of food and fuel poverty in UK news media - ScienceDirect.
Key themes from this work:
- Reports of food & fuel poverty (FFP) have markedly increased in the UK news since 2010.
- Insights into public perceptions of FFP and why it is regarded as one issue.
- FFP is most commonly framed as a trade-off between food and fuel by UK news sources.
- FFP is often framed as a government responsibility, yet the frame is vague, and lacks consistency.
- Framing FFP as a public health issue in the UK news may help generate discussion around prevention.
Aravinda also submitted a networking grant with the Business School and German Applied Health Scientists, building on a successful event co-organised by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, a research funding organisation in Germany) in Inverness a few months ago.
