Aberdeen Centre for Women's Health Research (ACWHR) Seminar with Professor Shantini Paranjothy, Director of Public Health Annual Report 2025/26: Women’s Health – Working Together to Improve Women’s Health in Grampian

Shantini Paranjothy qualified as a doctor from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff in 1995 and worked as a junior doctor in obstetrics and gynaecology and sexual health in England between 1995 - 1999. She obtained a MSc in medical statistics (with Distinction) in 2000 and a PhD in Epidemiology in 2004 from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Shantini completed specialty training in public health in Cardiff during 2004 - 2008 and was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University and Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Public Health Wales in 2009 - 2016, where she developed her research portfolio on inequalities on women and children's health. In 2016, Shantini was appointed as the Mansel Talbot Professor of Preventative Medicine at Cardiff University, a Co-Director of the Cardiff School of Medicine's Division of Population Medicine. She was also appointed and served as a Non-Executive Director on the Public Health Wales NHS Trust Board between 2017 and 2020.

Shantini moved to Scotland in 2020 and took up the role of Professor of Public Health at Aberdeen University and Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine at NHS Grampian, during which time she was also the lead Public Health Consultant for Test and Protect in Grampian. Shantini was appointed as the Director of Public Health in NHS Grampian in 2025 and is also a Co-Director of the NIHR funded Health Determinants Research Collaboration, which is led by Aberdeen City Council as a partnership including NHS Grampian, University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University.
