KL101Q: COUNSELLING SKILLS 1

15 credits

Level 1

First Sub Session

This practical experiential Course, develops self-awareness and Advanced Communication Skills.   Counselling Skills 1-4 make up the Counselling Skills Certificate (COSCA validated), first step in becoming a Counsellor or Psychotherapist. This professional qualification is a usual prerequisite for Post graduate study in Counselling and Counselling  Psychology in Scotland  and is a valuable addition to any CV. Students  must be prepared to fully participate in all aspects of the course including mock counselling sessions to achieve a pass mark.

KL151R: COUNSELLING SKILLS 2

Level 1

Second Sub Session

 The theme of this module is Exploration and Expansion.  
You will continue to develop the practical  skills introduced in Counselling Skills 1  in this practical experiential course. You will understand the structure  of a Counselling Relationship  within professional ethics and boundaries. You will explore your self awareness and self-in-context in relation to  transitions,  attachment , loss  and readjustment . Also in relation to  your attitudes to difference, your values, prejudice, social identity and the ethic of justice .

KL2010: COUNSELLING SKILLS: AN INTRODUCTION TO TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

First Sub Session

 Transactional analysis  (TA)  is a model for understanding human personality,relationships and communication . This course builds on previous Counselling skills training  and/or practical experience  .This course will offer participants the opportunity to become more familiar with ideas and concepts that form the basis of an approach which is readily applicable to many different settings and which may provide a useful complement to existing listening skills. 

 

KL2013: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH TO COUNSELLING

15 credits

First Sub Session

This course offers the opportunity to gain experience and in depth understanding of one conceptual model.   Participants will integrate the use of Psychodynamic skills with an understanding of theory, the process of practice and individual growth and personal development .  This is a practical , experiential course. Participants must be willing to fully engage with course content and take part in counselling skills practice. There will be a mixture of presentations, discussion, activity, readings and experiential work throughout.

 

KL2017: A PERSON CENTRED APPROACH TO HELPING RELATIONSHIPS

15 credits

Level 2

First Sub Session

The aim of this course is to provide an opportunity to develop and apply person-centred counselling and interpersonal skills to non-counselling settings; it can also be a step towards Diploma training and a career in counselling.  This will enhance participants’ personal and professional interaction with others and reflective practice..This is an opportunity for people from a wide range of backgrounds to learn experientially  together in a group setting. 

 Participants will be able to explore the connection of self-awareness and self-acceptance to practice in the process of the person-centred approach. 

KL2019: FURTHER STEPS IN COUNSELLING 1

15 credits

Level 2

First Sub Session

The focus of this course is the further development of participants’ counselling skills.  It will give those who have completed Counselling Skills 1–4 (COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate or equivalent) the opportunity to reconnect with their previous learning and experience and update their practice and understanding of counselling skills.  It will also assist participants to further deepen and develop their knowledge of counselling skills.

The core of the learning comes from participants working with their own life experiences and skills applications.

 

KL2022: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS

15 credits

Level 2

First Sub Session

The course provides an introduction to theories of mindfulness and how mindfulness can be used in relation to, for example, stress and self-compassion. There are opportunities to learn various mindfulness practices and reflect on their effect: home practice of a minimum of 30 minutes a day is an integral part of this and a journal is to be kept reflecting on this as well as experiences in the group. Small group work gives students an opportunity to discuss and monitor their own learning

The course content has some flexibility in order to respond to any specific needs of the group.

KL20D1: AN INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL COUNSELLING

15 credits

Level 2

First Sub Session

In cognitive behavioural counselling the counsellor works with the client to identify the thoughts arising from their interpretation of life experiences which lead to changes in mood and behaviour. He/she then facilitates the development of the necessary skills and strategies to find more adaptive thinking or behaviours. This course will work with strategies for stress management that can be applied to other client issues. This course assumes  previous  practical experience as a professional helper or Counsellor or completion of Counselling Skills 1 &2

KL2518: TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The course will build on previous Transactional Analysis (TA) training and practical experience.  Students will focus on important counselling themes in order to explore and integrate a range of TA concepts. The course will focus on aspects of TA which describe and explain the ways in which individuals develop; the impact of childhood experiences on later life, stages of development, how these continue throughout life, the components of life scripts and the significance of internal psychological processes.

Students will be able to analyse their own developmental history and identify personal current developmental needs

This is a course leading to the professional qualification of Person-Centred Counselling Supervision (COSCA validated). Participants must have a Diploma or Post Graduate Diploma  in Counselling, psychotherapy,social work or equivalent  with at least two years  post qualifying supervised practice .

This training, although experiential, is focused solely on the personal and professional development of participants as a counselling supervisor. Please consider carefully your own level of emotion integration and ability to work within professional boundaries.

KL301B: COUNSELLING SKILLS DISSERTATION WITH GROUP INSTRUCTION

30 credits

Level 3

First Sub Session

This course is an opportunity to start to think about the importance of the role of research as a counselling skills practitioner and will utilise a mix of theoretical and experiential methods.  Students will be supported in the construction and writing of the resulting dissertation, the methods of referencing and relaying data.  During the course, students will share and discuss their own work, providing peer group support and constructive criticism on preliminary drafts, with assistance from the tutor with research problems.  Individual tutorials will form part of the course.
