Course Overview

The focus of this course is the further development of participants’ counselling skills.  It will give those who have completed Counselling Skills 1–4 (COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate or equivalent) the opportunity to reconnect with their previous learning and experience and update their practice and understanding of counselling skills.  It will also assist participants to further deepen and develop their knowledge of counselling skills.

The core of the learning comes from participants working with their own life experiences and skills applications.

Course Description

Each unit has been designed to enable participants to evidence two core competencies whilst they are engaged in large and small group discussions and practice groups.  Competence 1: Establish, maintain and bring to an end a supportive interaction.  Competence 2: Self Monitoring.

Further Steps 1 will concentrate on the following topics 

  •  Attitudes and Beliefs about Human Development.
  • Gender and Sexual identity.
  • Counselling Models and Process of Change.
  • Understanding Trauma.
  • Understanding and working with Addictions/Dependency.
  • Transpersonal Perspective and Psychosynthesis.
  • Working with Conflict.
  • Practical experiential work using counselling skills to develop practice in the seminar/workshop on a weekly basis.

This course may not be suitable for anyone who is currently receiving Counselling  or has faced a serious emotional issue in the last six months.
Class size is limited to 15. You must be able to attend the same class at the same time  over 10 weeks .There is a strict attendance requirement of at least 85% . If you miss more than two 3 Hr classes for any reason you cannot pass the course.
 As an undergraduate student you do not pay tuition fees but will be required to pay the COSCA materials fee of £30 at the online store before the first class  and before  your  workbook will  be issued. You will also be required to pay £10.00 at the online store before your COSCA Certificate will be issued.
Your class may include part-time students of all ages.

In light of Covid-19 and the move to blended learning delivery the assessment information advertised for courses may be subject to change. All updates for first-half session courses will be actioned no later than 1700 (GMT) on 18 September 2020. All updates for second half-session courses will be actioned in advance of second half-session teaching starting. Please check back regularly for updates.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Assessment will be through continuous assessment (2000 word essay (25%), 300-500 word weekly learning log (25%) and oral assessment (50%). Resit: Resubmission of essay (2000 words). There is no resit of learning logs or oral assessment. Failure of these elements will require repeat of the course.

Formative Assessment

Assessment will be through continuous assessment of oral practice and weekly learning logs.


Weekly: A reflective learning log will be read by tutors on weekly submission and any necessary feedback or concerns communicated to students. At the end of the course 12 logs will be graded linked to the CAS and weighted at 25% of the overall course mark. Oral practice and participation: Tutors will give individual feedback as necessary during the course. Oral Practice and participation will be marked on the CAS scale and will make up 50% of the course mark.
