PS5001: RESEARCH PROJECT FOR MRES PSYCHOLOGY

60 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

Over the course of your MRes, and under the supervision of two members of staff, you will undertake an empirical research project within a chosen area of specialisation.  The choice of research project depends on your interests and the projects that are available.  The initial work on the literature review and the conception of the research begins when you start the course, in close collaboration with the supervisors.  The research project continues throughout the MRes year, in parallel with the taught course modules. 

PS5008: INTRODUCTION TO THE POSTGRADUATE PROCESS

20 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

This course will provide you with information about the structure of postgraduate study, as well as sources of assistance in dealing with any problems which may arise during your degree.  You should also develop a good understanding of your rights and obligations concerning your working relationship with your supervisor.
You will be introduced to good practice in demonstrating and small group teaching, attain a thorough understanding of the ethical issues in psychological research and the Data Protection Act, learn about the philosophy of science and the history of Psychology, and be introduced to reviewing literature and reference management.

PS5200: PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH SKILLS 1

20 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

You will be introduced to research funding, grant application, intellectual property (IP) and commercialisation, will learn about the main stages involved during the preparation of a research proposal as part of a submission for external funding, and review the principal sources of research grant and research contract funding.  You will attend a session on developing professional academic web pages, and be introduced to the basic steps for effective dissemination of information in scientific posters, manuscripts, and oral presentations, as well as how to make best use of feedback from conferences and the journal review process.

PS5301: ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS AND DESIGN FOR PSYCHOLOGY 1

20 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

You will gain an overview of the principles of good research design in both qualitative and quantitative studies, and will be encouraged to apply these principles in an interactive mini-viva scenario.  You will consolidate and extend your knowledge of the one-way and factorial ANOVA.  You will also be be provided with an improved practical understanding of regression.
This course provides a number of practical sessions, such as as conducting analyses in SPSS, using SPSS to conduct ANOVA calculations, and the use of bivariate regression and its extension to multiple regression, with particular emphasis on hierarchical multiple regression.

PS5512: ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS AND DESIGN FOR PSYCHOLOGY 2

20 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

This course introduces you to the topics of logistic regression, effect sizes and statistical power.  You will have hands-on experience in simulating data to examine issues relating to effect size and statistical power.  You will also gain an understanding of factor analysis and multidimensional scaling, using SPSS to conduct these analyses.
You will also be introduced to a number of data collection methods and data analytic techniques commonly used by qualitative researchers, and will learn more about designing and using questionnaires.

PS5700: PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH SKILLS 2

20 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

This course will provide you with guidance on writing the 9-month report and MRes thesis, and guidance on how to prepare for the oral examination or viva (viva voce) of your thesis.  This course also covers communication with non-academic audiences, including the Press, and you will learn how to communicate your research in a manner that is accessible to non-experts.
The final part of this course focuses on careers in academia and includes a careers discussion session where a panel of academics and researchers will describe their career paths and invite questions about life as an academic.


PS5902: APPLYING RESEARCH TECHNIQUES IN PSYCHOLOGY

20 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

In this course you will learn the research techniques of computational modelling in psychology, eye movement methods in psychology, and neuroimaging research methods.  You will also learn more about conducting research involving children, conducting research in collaboration with industry, and conducting research with older adults.
