First Sub Session

Delivered by the University’s experienced Staff Development team, the programme addresses leadership in three overlapping levels. At the core, foundational level, is personal leadership: understanding your own behaviours and actions, and what leadership means for you. Next is how you lead in relation to others; how you communicate, interact, direct and influence to build your team. The outer level is leadership in a wider context, taking an organisational view on how your role as a leader can support the achievement of your team through motivating and engaging them to succeed.

BU502J: PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACHES IN BUSINESS RESEARCH

All research is underpinned by ontological and epistemological assumptions of some form. The choice of research philosophy is an important step in the research development process. On completion of this course, students will be able to critically reflect on the foundations of research styles and be able to identify and justify an appropriate research design and theoretical approach for their own project, which will enable them to conduct academically rigorous research. This course bridges the gap between the master’s level research skills and the doctoral level.

This course bridges the gap between master’s level research skills and the doctoral level. The course examines the issues involved in designing and conducting research in a business area. It utilises a research orientated set of readings and examples. The course will also be of interest to those undertaking a professional or work-based doctoral project such as a DBA.

Likewise, for you as an individual, developments in aspects of your personal and professional life will often require you to change. This might mean acquiring new knowledge, skills and approaches, especially in relation to your employability and career. By understanding more about the context and dynamics of change as well as the differing interpretations and reactions to change, you will be in a better position personally and professionally. You will carry out an analysis of your personality and leadership type before working to complete an online leadership simulation, the Everest Challenge, which requires you to plan and execute a survival strategy, using limited resources to overcome challenges. You will then explore a range of leadership case studies to explore how and why different decisions are made depending on situation, context and past experience. Towards the end of the course, you will consider your own professional development and look at future business trends.

You will carry out an analysis of your personality and leadership type before working to complete an online leadership simulation, the Everest Challenge, which requires you to plan and execute a survival strategy, using limited resources to overcome challenges. You will then explore a range of leadership case studies to explore how and why different decisions are made depending on situation, context and past experience. Towards the end of the course, you will consider your own professional development and look at future business trends.
