[da capo - back to the beginning] and repeat 1st strain [section]' was cut to 'D.C.' in the printed version. Since his comment 'Give one bow to each bar...' was printed underneath the second tune, the player might well misunderstand the instruction. This is the final draft, the copy used by the printers when they set the music for publication. Afterwards, the publishers Bayley and Ferguson (London and Glasgow) returned the draft copy to Greig.
The Devil in the Kitchen

The name 'Devil' often describes the youngest apprentice (as in 'a printer's devil'). In a big kitchen the devil would tend the fires, and turn the spits. This is the final draft, the copy used by the printers when they set the music for publication. Afterwards, the publishers returned the draft copy to Greig. You can listen to Skinner playing this melody, best known for its association with the Highland Fling (cd112b).
