Course Overview

The course will span a century of protests across Europe, the Americas and North Africa, with causes including peace, democracy, human rights, anti-racism, labour rights, equality for women and LGBTI+ communities, climate change and decolonisation. Students will learn about the history, culture and politics of the countries where protests erupt, including of the social movements that lead protests. Approaches will include history, literary, film and media analysis, material and visual culture, music and social science methods.

Course Description

The course will span a century of protests across Europe, the Americas and North Africa, with causes including peace, democracy, human rights, anti-racism, labour rights, equality for women and LGBTI+ communities, climate change and decolonisation. It will give particular attention to the role of young people including students in protest movements.

Protests do not occur in a vacuum. Students will learn about the history, culture and politics of the countries where protests erupt, including of the social movements that lead protests. The course will also consider protestors’ creative uses of art, music, film and literature, and of mass and social media to advance their causes.

Approaches will include history, literary, film and media analysis, material and visual culture, music and social science methods.
All materials will be available in English translation.

Students to write a 1,000 word piece in the style of a protest movement campaigns communications officer to recruit new members. In addition, students are to submit a 500 word reflective journal detailing why they chose that social movement; what arguments/materials they chose to foreground, why and how.
