This course will introduce students to key criminological theories and perspectives to understand e.g. why some people are more likely to commit or be victims of crime than others and examine the learning and insight to be taken from those theories.

The course will address and develop understanding and knowledge of key criminological perspectives. Recognising there is no one cause of crime and criminal behaviour; the course will conduct an in - depth study of key criminological theories to better understand the causes of crime and to reflect on different assumptions and ideologies behind these different perspectives. Understanding the reasons and explanations why a person commits a crime allows insight into ways to control crime or rehabilitate the criminal.
The emphasis is on understanding explanations of crime, criminal behaviour, and the consequent harm caused and to examine the potential to control crime and criminal behaviour through the application of different conceptual and theoretical approaches to specific forms of criminality, victimisation and injustice.
