This course introduces the theory of dynamics and the vibration of single and multi-degree of freedom systems, and dynamics of rotating and reciprocating machinery.

This course commences with an overview of the dynamics of a particle and of general planar kinematics and dynamics before proceeding to a review of the free and forced vibration response of a linear single degree of freedom system. An introduction to the vibration of systems with two or more degrees of freedom follows, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, principal co-ordinates and calculation of the forced response using the impedance method. Then the dynamic forces and moments associated with rotating and reciprocating machinery are examined. The design of a passive vibration absorber and testing in the laboratory are included the course. Matlab is used for calculations of dynamic responses and natural frequencies and mode shapes.
Available only to students following an Honours degree programme in Engineering.

1st Attempt: 1 two hour written examination paper (70%) and continuous assessment (30%).
Resit: 1 two hour written examination paper (70%) with previous mark for in-course assessment standing.
