Course Description

This course commences with an overview of the dynamics of a particle and of general planar kinematics and dynamics before proceeding to a review of the free and forced vibration response of a linear single degree of freedom system. An introduction to the vibration of systems with two or more degrees of freedom follows, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, principal co-ordinates and calculation of the forced response using the impedance method. Then the dynamic forces and moments associated with rotating and reciprocating machinery are examined. The design of a passive vibration absorber and testing in the laboratory are included the course. Matlab is used for calculations of dynamic responses and natural frequencies and mode shapes.

Assessment

1st Attempt: 1 three hour written examination paper (80%), and continuous assessment (20%). Students are expected to keep a logbook of the practical work and to write a report of the work. Continuous assessment will be based on the report and will take into account the keeping of the logbook and performance in carrying out the practical work. Resit: 1 three hour written examination paper (80%), and continuous assessment (20%).
