BT5006: CORE MOLECULAR TECHNIQUES

15 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

BT5010: SMALL MOLECULE DRUG DISCOVERY

25 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

The course will focus on small molecule drug discovery.  Receptor theory and cell communication and signalling will be revised to facilitate understanding of the remainder of the course. The basis of the drug discovery process will be described and the phases of drug development discussed.  A range of targets for drug discovery will be identified and how small molecule drug affect these will be described.  Issues around drug regulation will be raised.

BT5012: INTRODUCTION TO BIO-BUSINESS AND THE COMMERCIALISATION OF BIOSCIENCE RESEARCH

15 credits

Level 5

First Sub Session

This course introduces the drug discovery and development process from a business perspective using both the Big Pharma and biotech business models. Intellectual property rights (IPR) will be covered in detail as will the basics of financing and setting up a biotechnology based business. The drivers and triggers for setting up a business as well as some of the pitfalls will be discussed. External experts will provide insight into the Bio-Business world and will describe “how they got to where they are today” as role models for bioentrpreneurs.

BT5502: SPECIAL STUDY MODULE 2 – BIOLOGIC THERAPIES

25 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

This course is aimed at the understanding of novel areas of drug discovery with the specific aim of understanding the role immunology and peptide chemistry play in informing the development of antibody and small molecule peptide-based biologic therapies for diverse diseases.

BT5506: BUSINESS OF SCIENCE

5 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

This short course will provide you with a flavour of the ways in which scientific ideas can be commercialised. The main aim of this course is to introduce you to the language of business and demystify some of the jargon that surrounds business models, intellectual property rights (IPR) and finance. This is an opportunity to understand the basics of Bio-business and the commercialisation of bioscience.

BT5508: ADVANCED BIO-BUSINESS AND THE COMMERCIALISATION OF BIOSCIENCE RESEARCH

15 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

This is the second course on Bio-Business and follows on from BT5012 which is a prerequisite for this course. The course deals in depth with finance, corporate governance and business models. The major assessment involves the students working together in teams to set up a virtual bio-business and to pitch this business to a group of experts in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. The team will adopt the roles of senior management team and present to the experts their part of the business.

BT5902: LABORATORY TECHNIQUES - CORE PRACTICAL SKILLS

15 credits

Level 5

Second Sub Session

The course aims to develop understanding, confidence and competence in the laboratory ahead of practical projects, with a view to making students comfortable within a life sciences research laboratory. It aims to provide students with some independence in practical terms, enhancing existing skills and developing new techniques in context with work inside a research project. The course serves as an induction for applying theory into practice, so that students understand the underlying principles of the procedures and how to effectively carry them out.
