This course is intended for students who have studied French to Higher A or equivalent/above level and are taking French Language as an elective, in other words as part of Study a Language for 2 years, or as spare or extra credits, but NOT as part of a degree that contains ‘French’ in its title. If you are unsure which course to select, haven’t studied French for some time, or are struggling to select this course on MyCurriculum, please email the course coordinator to find out.
This course will enable students to consolidate and extend their knowledge of French, written and spoken, working towards a CERF level of B1 by the end of the follow-on course next semester (should you decide to also select that course). It lays equal emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking, and in general insists as much on accuracy as on fluency. It presents certain intermediate grammatical structures and introduces techniques of translation. It also offers students opportunities to improve their communication skills through group work and discussion, as well as develop an understanding of key aspects of French and Francophone cultures and societies. The course consists of three timetabled weekly hours: one seminar; one language seminar ; and one oral class. In addition, students follow a structured programme of private study, including a weekly listening task and step-by-step preparation and practice materials
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
