Research Interests
We are interested in hearing from students wishing to undertake postgraduate level work in German studies in a range of areas. In addition, we also welcome interdisciplinary projects involving more than one department as German department staff have experience in interdisciplinary research. As such, please contact one of the supervisors below if you are thinking about applying for a PhD in their research area.

- Dr Tara Beaney

Dr Tara Beaney has a background in comparative literature, with a research focus on German literature from the Romantic period to the present day. Her first monograph Metamorphosis in Modern German Literature: Transforming Bodies, Identities and Affects (2016) examined how stories of radical bodily transformation can offer insight into threatened identities, attitudes towards bodily experience, and changing affective styles across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her current research focuses on German literature and the environment.
- Dr Katya Krylova

Dr Katya Krylova’s research is focused on modern and contemporary German and Austrian studies. She is the author of two monographs: Walking Through History: Topography and Identity in the Works of Thomas Bernhard and Ingeborg Bachmann (2013; Winner of the 2011 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition in German Studies) and The Long Shadow of the Past: Contemporary Austrian Literature, Film, and Culture (2017). She is also the sole editor of the multi-authored book New Perspectives on Contemporary Austrian Literature and Culture (2018).
