Musical, Cultural and Religious Networks in Early Modern Europe: in Celebration of Peter Philips's 450th Anniversary
Taking the career of Peter Philips (1560/61-1628) as a springboard for an investigation of the various social, religious, cultural and musical networks into which musicians and artists fitted in the Early Modern period, this conference includes papers which range from English recusant history to Italian cardinals, from early keyboard sources to music for instrumental ensembles.
Keyboard music by Philips will be performed by Rachelle Taylor, David J. Smith and Pieter Dirksen on organ and harpsichord; works by his Dutch contemporary Jan ieterszoon Sweelinck will be played on organ by Pieter Dirksen and on harpsichord by Hank Knox. The Rose Consort of Viols will play some ensemble music by Philips and Dowland, and the choir of King's College Chapel, Aberdeen, sing works by Byrd, Marenzio, Lassus, Caccini and Philips.
The recitals form part of the University's recital series, and are open to members of the general public, who are also welcome to the conference.
The conference is a Royal Musical Association affiliated conference hosted by the Department of Music with the Centre for Early Modern Studies in collaoration with The Schulich School of Music, McGill University, with the generous support of the Consulate of the Royal Netherlands, Aberdeen.
