Chapel Choir

The members of the Chapel Choir are the successors to the original Vicars Choral which Bishop Elphinstone appointed to sing the Daily Office at the foundation of the University. The modern Chapel Choir is an auditioned choir of around 30 members, was formed in 1891 to sing at the University Services which are now held weekly in term-time.  There is a regular rehearsal on Tuesdays in addition to Sunday mornings.  Concerts, recordings and recent broadcasts have all featured the Chapel Choir.

Today's repertoire ranges from medieval plainchants of the type that the founder would have known, to new pieces, some specially written for the Choir. Inter-denominational services enable music of many different traditions to be represented. In the early 1980s eight Choral and two Organ Scholarships were established to help maintain the tradition of excellence of music provision in the University Chapel - the only medieval chapel in Scotland to be used for regular Services.

Entrance

Entrance to the Chapel Choir is by audition only. Auditions are held every September and potential members can sign up at the Music Department stall at the Fresher's Fayre (Wednesday 21st Setpember) or by coming to the Music Office. Auditions last 10 minutes and you will be asked to prepare a song which demonstrates your vocal ability. There will also be a sight-singing test.
