Bioinformatics Training Course - Microbial Community Analysis

Bioinformatics Training Course - Microbial Community Analysis
-

Part of the Centre for Genome Enabled Biology and Medicine (CGEBM) bioinformatics training course series, this course will introduce you to methods for using modern sequencing data to study composition of microbial communities in water, soil, gut and other environments.

Wide availability of next-generation sequencing technologies have made sampling genomes of microbial communities much easier than before. By assessing microbial community composition, we can learn about how this composition changes in response to environmental, nutritional or other conditions. The workshop will take participants through microbial community analysis with 16S rRNA gene data using the R-based analysis software, DADA2. This tool performs quality control, sequence variant identification and quantification, and taxonomic assignment. The outputs can then be processed using PhyloSeq to assess diversity statistics and abundance of specific taxa. Dr. Walker will provide a lecture highlighting the importance of appropriate study design and analysis.

Prerequisites: None.

This is an instructor led computer-based tutorial with support demonstrators.

Instructors: CGEBM Bioinformaticians (Dr Antonio Ribeiro, Dr Dami Oresegun, and Dr Louie van de Lagemaat) with lecture from Dr Alan Walker (Rowett Institute)
