The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) is a unique, cross-school institution. Its mission is to support and coordinate research between the school of medical sciences and the school of medicine. Nearly 400 faculty members, researchers and support staff work on cutting-edge biomedical subjects aimed at understanding how the human body functions, how it responds to fight infection and disease and how eventually these diseases may be eradicated. The IMS faculty work in dedicated research buildings on the Foresterhill campus adjacent to the central site of the Aberdeen hospitals, making for the largest medical campus in Europe. The IMS provides state-of-the-art laboratory space and facilities necessary for the outstanding research by the faculty. In addition, the IMS provides specific support for:

  • Studentships - providing the opportunity for local and international students to train in science
  • Core services - the latest equipment and facilities provide the tools to explore the biological world at its finest levels
  • Seminars - Invitations are given to the worlds top scientists to visit and speak at the IMS disseminating new ideas and concepts in the biology of health and disease
