Course Overview

  • This advanced course explores epithelial physiology in normal gastrointestinal, renal and respiratory function.
  • Students will examine how epithelial cells regulate the movement of ions, nutrients and water, and how disruption contributes to diseases such as infectious diarrhoea and cystic fibrosis.
  • Students will develop an understanding of epithelial transport mechanisms and the experimental approaches used to study them.
  • The course includes a research-led wet-lab practical supported by workshops, data analysis guidance and a post-practical seminar.
  • Students will develop technical, scientific, analytical, communication, teamwork and employability skills through a scientific paper-style lab report and group Research Symposium.

Course Description

Epithelial physiology is essential for normal body function, and disruption of epithelial transport processes can contribute to disease. In this course, students will explore how epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal, renal and respiratory systems regulate the controlled movement of ions, nutrients and water, and how disruption of these processes contributes to important diseases such as infectious diarrhoea and cystic fibrosis. The course examines the common features of transporting epithelial cells, the technologies used to study them, and the role of epithelial transport mechanisms in health and disease. The course also includes a research-led wet-lab practical component supported by workshops, a laboratory practical, data analysis guidance and a post-practical seminar. Students will analyse experimental data, write an individual scientific paper-style lab report, and take part in a group Research Symposium linked to the practical. These activities are designed to strengthen technical, scientific, analytical, communication, teamwork and employability skills relevant to physiology, pharmacology, biomedical sciences and related careers.
