This course will consider art, film, literary texts, and music from the late 19th century and early 20th century in Vienna, a period characterised by radically new thought on society and the self, and innovative forms of artistic expression. Works by Robert Musil, Arthur Schnitzler, Otto Wagner, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, G.W. Pabst, Arnold Schönberg and Sigmund Freud will be examined in their socio-historical contexts to understand what made turn-of-the century Vienna such a culturally-dynamic place, which gave rise to ideas that continue to shape our lives today.
