Course Overview

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and tools to navigate the rapidly evolving field of green and sustainable finance and contribute to the transition towards a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable global financial system.

It develops an advanced understanding of how green and sustainable finance may be deployed in the real-world policy or business context, thereby contributing to the achievement of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Course Description

The course is designed to develop students’ understanding and skills in areas of finance focusing on key issues around climate change, environmental concerns, and sustainable development.

This course first introduces the key issues that society and business face nowadays when related to green and sustainable finance. Then the course starts with defining green and sustainable finance, exploring its principles, objectives, and significance in addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues and promoting sustainable development, and providing an overview of the evolving landscape of green and sustainable finance, including key trends, and regulatory developments. It aims to equip students with the knowledge of integrating ESG factors into financing and investment decision-making processes. The course covers relevant Finance and Economics theories, academic research articles, and government policy initiatives.

The main topics discussed in this course may include but not be limited to:
1. Drivers of sustainable development: Climate risks and sustainability
2. Strategic planning of business and value creation
3. Sustainable development goals (SDGs) and goals of the Paris agreement on climate change
4. Green and sustainable finance: fundamentals, instruments, markets, and risk management.
5. Regulation and reporting: central banking and financial supervision.
6. Governance, stakeholder engagement, and ESG integration.
