This course explores child development from 0-18 through a theoretical and practical lens. Students undertake a placement a day a week throughout the course to explore their theoretical learning of child development in practice.

This course has both theoretical and practicum components.
Students will explore child development theories and research considering how children development between 0 and 18 years of age. The course will consider how children learn, think and communicate as they develop and how adults working with children need to adapt their practice in relation to individual learning needs and requirements.
Alongside their university taught sessions, student will undertake a practicum placement of 50 hours (10 x 5-hour days – one day a week) in an Early Years, Museum or third sector organisation that works with children/ teenagers. The students will use this practicum experience to contextualise and develop their understanding for theory and research in practice.
The summative assessment presentation uses the practicum experience alongside learning of child development to critically analyse a published journal article.

The assignment will be to use their learning from the course and their practicum placement to produce a critical analysis of a published journal article focused on child development. Presentations will be 10 mins in length and will be recorded on Panopto. Submission of the slides and Panopto link will be via Turnitin/MyAberdeen. Feedback will be given using the assessment rubric and through the audio notes tool on Turnitin. |
