This course introduces students to contemporary conversations in the field of practical theology. It will cover foundational concepts such as the interpretation of practice and theological research methods and reflection. Students will engage with contemporary issues including (for example) politics, technology, gender and sexuality, disability, and climate change, and will explore how practical theology intersects with modern life and global challenges.

This course offers an overview of current conversations in the field of practical theology. Students will have the opportunity to explore foundational concepts and approaches, such as qualitative and contextual research and methods of theological reflection. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how practical theology is shaped and refined in conversation with lived experience. Throughout the course, students will critically engage with contemporary conversations that are reshaping the discipline. These will include pressing global and societal issues such as (for example) political polarisation, technological innovation, as well as the lived experiences and intersections of gender, sexuality, disability, and race.

3,000-word individual report. Students will be supplied with a grading rubric in advance of submission. This will measure skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as research and the inclusion of evidence and examples.
