Course Description

This course focusses on solo performance alongside the development of core classroom performance skills (keyboard and vocal skills).

Students will receive 2hrs per week of group tuition divided equally between keyboard and vocal skills. These are core skills required by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). The group sessions will focus on the development of individual skill as well as preparing you to use and teach these skills in classroom settings.

Additional lectures focus on a research-led approach to musical performance, including ideas around performance practice, interpretation, style & genre, practice regimes, managing performance anxiety, presentation and stagecraft. Students will be given opportunities to perform during performance lectures, receiving feedback from their peers and teaching staff, and honing their abilities to critique and evaluate performances.

Students will be expected to attend at least 4 performances as part of the university concert series, to join and attend rehearsals with at least one university (or external) instrumental ensemble or choir, and to participate in occasional performance workshops / masterclasses by visiting performers and composers.
