This course focusses on solo performance alongside the development of core classroom performance skills (keyboard and vocal skills).
Students will receive 2hrs per week of group tuition divided equally between keyboard and vocal skills. These are core skills required by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). The group sessions will focus on the development of individual skill as well as preparing you to use and teach these skills in classroom settings.
Additional lectures focus on a research-led approach to musical performance, including ideas around performance practice, interpretation, style & genre, practice regimes, managing performance anxiety, presentation and stagecraft. Students will be given opportunities to perform during performance lectures, receiving feedback from their peers and teaching staff, and honing their abilities to critique and evaluate performances.
Students will be expected to attend at least 4 performances as part of the university concert series, to join and attend rehearsals with at least one university (or external) instrumental ensemble or choir, and to participate in occasional performance workshops / masterclasses by visiting performers and composers.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.

Attendance at 4 concerts and 1 ensemble. Participation in performance workshops, including masterclasses with visiting performers / composers as appropriate. Attendance at university concerts will be taken via a register. Students will also submit a short form outlining their attendance, ensemble activity, and any other relevant performance activities, including a short description of each (max 300 words). In the case of inability to attend the requisite number of concerts and / or ensembles due to ill health or other mitigating circumstances, students can instead write a short outline (max 300 words) of the other ways in which they have engaged in music-making this term, for example by recording their own playing, taking part in online collaborations, attending online performances, listening to / analysing recordings and videos. |
